Is it the beat that changes or is it the short and catchy melody of the Hook. Notice what is added and what is not added that’s appealing? There is something in every great hook that makes it great. Take an hour out of your day or a half hour and take notes on what it is that you notice.

This technique is a great way to get an idea of what type of hooks to write about or at least an idea on where to start. This technique will help you find new elements to add to your hooks and choruses. Just study the Top 40 radio stations to find what is being played and what it is to give your song that edge to be competitive with the current music.

Hook Writing Tip #1

Some say the hook is what makes the song. Others have said it’s the beat that makes a song a classic record. I think it’s a combination of both the beat and the lyrics that make a hot song or classic record.

Anyway the hook is a very important element of one song. In most cases the name of any song usually is taken from the chorus. The hook should be catchy.

Great hooks have great melodies. Choruses are short irresistible, catchy and easy to sing along with. A great hook will stick in the listeners mind, some till the end of time.

With that said we are going to give you a tip that can help at least make you aware of the process. This little exercise was given to me by a Capitol Records A&R that I actually use on a consistent basis.

The next time you’re listening to the radio, mainly only Top 40 radio stations, but pay attention the choruses. Usually it’s
