I guess its a no brainer when it omes to understanding how big of apart syllables play in words and rhyme. Espcecially when it comes down to your lines. hard stress or soft stress syllables will have a major effect on the sound of each line which is safe to say will also have an effect on your flow as well.
Flow-The way in which a rapper raps over a beat as a whole.
When I first started rappin I remember spendin long hours experimenting with different syllable endings. for example I would end my rhymes with one word syllales like cat, mack, back and snack making them my rhyming words throughout my verse.
Importance Of Syllables In Rhyme
Once I got that down, I would take that same one syllable rhyme word and experiment with multiple syllable words infront of the single syllable rhyme words. For example lets continue with the example above. I would end each line with a one syllable word like (me).
You can do you slim Imma do me
Once i had that down i would experiment with 1-2 syllable words infront of the 1 syllable rhyme ending word.
Made a couple stacks of them pies in-da v
This simple exercise gave me the understanding that syllables play a huge factor in your rhyming ability. That said, do our fair share of research and experimenting to turn your rhymes into something impressive.
Exercise 1
Practice today writing half a verse, 8 bars with one syllable rhyming words. Don't focus as much on the inner line words more so the rhyme ending words
1 syllable words Make
2 syllable words Wonder
3 syllable words benefit
Exercise 2
This time write another 8 bars making sure to focus on putting 1 syllable words in front of your 1 syllable rhyme ending word.
Exercise 3
This time do the same as exercise 2 except focus on putting 2 syllable words infront of the 1 syllable rhyme ending word.
Exercise 4
Okay next, do the same thing as the other exercises but this time instead of putting a 2 syllable word use 3syllable words in front of the 1 syllable rhyme ending word.
Exercise 5
For the last exercise I want you to place 4 syllable words in front of the 1 syllable rhyme ending word.
Practice these exercises and experiment with different combos to see what you can come up with.
