Lyrics are expressions that are coupled with cultural and societal feelings of how an individual perceives these expressions. Most often great lyrics include great themes on political, social and economic life and usually deliver a message that is culturally important. Do your lyrics convey your feelings, experiences, and ideas?  Let your lyrics portray the struggles and difficulties that you are facing in life in past present and future.  This way of writing can be very therapeutic.

Another great thing to consider when writing your lyrics is making songs that listeners can relate to. Those lyrics that tell of excess wealth and luxury of artists may connect to a group of individuals with such dreams. Or lyrics about someone who has problems at home like a drunken father or drug addicted mother can reach those of us who are literally in these types of situations.  Try and touch on real life situations and every day

struggles of real people.  If you can capture the true feelings of someone in that situation it could be an incredible connection between you and the listener.

Hip hop lyrics in general most often cover all types of different topics. When writing your lyrics keep that in mind.  Don’t just rap about cars and money and models.  A lot of people don’t get top models and roll in Benzes all day.  A lot of people are out here really struggling to make a dollar out of fifteen cents.  So think about those people when you’re thinking of ways to connect with your listeners.

Hip hop lyrics are known for their conversational quality.  The real essence of it all is to convert real life conversation into song.  That’s it.  It is not necessary for your lyrics to be pretty at all times. Let your lyrics be spontaneous and free as if you were having a conversation with someone. A great exercise I like to do is listen to someone’s conversation and convert his style of talk into rhyme.

Give special importance and attention to their speech. The lack of attention can result in a stigmatized speech. More attention means, the speech becomes more standard or formal.  But when rapping try a standard speech as well as formal.  Try it and see what you can come up with.

When writing your lyrics don’t steer away from the basics.  Find usage in features such as assonance, imagery, alliteration, and rhymes. Focusing on these elements allows individuals to learn the rhythmic structures along with the basics such as consonants, vowels, blends, and spellings.

So study your craft and continue to focus on becoming the best rapper as you can be.  Until next time, Good luck!
