This is measured b the number of syllables in each line. A 5 foot syllable line is called a penemeter (Meaning 5)

Remember two units (or syllables) are considered a foot in poetry. Each foot has certain stress patterns. There are five different stress patterns that can associate with a foot, and not all of them are 2

syllables. We'll touch on everything briefly in the paragraphs below.

STRESS PATTERNS

In all, there are only five possible stress patterns available. These are

Iamb Unstressed + Stressed

2 Syllables

Trochee Stressed + Unstressed

2 Syllables

Spondee Stressed + Stressed

2 Syllables

Anapest Unstressed + Unstressed + Stressed 3 Syllables

Dactyl

Stressed + Unstressed + Unstressed 3 Syllables

Like in poetry meter plays a big part in music. So I think it would be

a great place to spend a little time on. Poetry meter is another avenue

that I believe every rapper should strive to acknowledge. With that

said lets talk about the different kinds of meter.

The length of lines in poetry can very just like the length of your

bars.

Below is a list of the different types of meter and line length.

Monometer 1 foot

Dimeter

2 foot

Trimeter 3 foot

Tetrameter 4 foot

Pentemeter 5 foot

Hexameter 6 foot

Heptameter 7 foot

Octameter 8 foot

Meter is determined by the type of foot and the number of feet in a line. We'll leave you with an example.

For example - A line with 6 dactylic feet is known as dactylic hexameter. A line with 3 iambic feet is known as iambic trimeter.

Poetry In Rap - Some Basics

As you already know, poetry plays a humongous part in rap music. With that said we're going to talk briefly about stressed and unstressed syllables. We get tons and tons of emails concerning questions, views and comments about stressed and unstressed syllables.

Another word for stressed in poetry is accented. Stressed or accented syllables or the long part of the syllable and the unstressed or unaccented syllable is also called the short part of the syllable. In verse as well as in poetry syllables are done in meter.

In poetry meter is a reoccurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a set pattern. A pair of stressed and unstressed syllables are known as a foot. So in poetry you could have a poem with 5 feet lines.

Remember I told you in poetry lines are measured in meter.
