In the music business owning your own rights is king. You choose to be your own publisher and make 100% of your royalties, or you can hire someone to do it for you.
Music publishing is simply owning the copyrights to a song. As soon as you complete a song you own it. The fact that you wrote the song on your own which means you are also the publisher of that song.
If you own the rights you can keep them forever and not share them with anybody. Any income you genereate comes as writer and publisher royalties. So that’s double the money if you own both.
You can also decide to publish your music with a publisher. When you do that you transfer all of your

publishing rights and any income that is generated is shared 50/50. You only get the writers share so if your royalties are $100,000 you would get $50,000.
You can also take it to the next chapter and give away half of your publishing rights. So your publisher would keep 25% of your publishing rights and you would keep 75% plus 100% of your writers rights. This is known as a co-publishing deal.
So what does a music publisher do? A music publisher is responsible for copyrighting your songs. They are also responsible for collecting royalties.
The main source of publishing income comes from record sales, tv broadcasts and radio, from sheet music and licensing for tv commercials and films. A good publisher should try and get you a record deal, and your songs featured in films amongst other duties.
A good publisher will do whatever it takes to make sure you are properly compensated for your music. He or she will make sure your copyrights are not infringed upon.
A publisher is a tremendous asset especially when your time is limited. You may also choose to sign with a music publisher when you feel you can’t handle the business side of things, like phone calls, attending meetings and trying to sell yourself.
On the other hand if you already have a few industry contacts to promote your songs and generate income-you can remain your own publisher and generate your own publisher income. But when its all said and done it boils down to whatever you want to do.
Good Luck…..
