As a rapper it is crucial that you practice practice practice and then when your that, practice some more.  Practice at home, and in the studio and where ever and when ever you can.  The more you practice the better and better you'll gradually become.

Study your craft.  As a rapper you use tons and tons of words, cadences, and line structures so wouldn't it make since to study those particular things.  For instance what better source for words then a dictionary do you know of?  And Poetry is a great way to learn about line structure, and cadences.

Many times when I'm in the studio I hear something I like and most of the time I keep it, but there are those times when I let outside forces influence my decision on keeping what I laid down.  Use your ears and follow your instinct.  You are the artist and you know what
How To Better Your Craft
sounds hot to you.  Don't be afraid to charter untapped waters to expand the creative process, if that's what your song needs.

On the other hand if your instinct tells you that something is wrong, then by all means change the approach to your song and weed out the bad stuff.

Learn as much as you can when doing what ever it is that your doing with your musical talents.  If your in the studio don't just rap.  Try and learn what it is your engineer or producer is doing to make your music the est it can be.  Knowledge is power for real.  Its so many different avenues to take in the music field why not try and learn as much as you can.

Get a good lawyer, when the times right of course.  If all your doing is making a mixtape to pass out around the hood then nah you don't need a lawyer right now at this stage.  But if your signing contracts for beats or negotiating a cd packaging and distribution deal then you are definitely going to need one.  And DO NOT sing anything without letting your lawyer read over it first.  Another thing is you don't need a top notch fancy lawyer, better yet as a indie I would say find the cheapest one you can afford.

Start a web site and put up free downloads of your music.  Then a newsletter email is a great way to get in touch with fans about new music, shows and parties.  We hope this article has gave you a few pointers on how to prefect your craft.

Until next time....Good Luck
